AIIMS Jammu Observes World Cancer Day 2026: “United by Unique

JAMMU — Under the visionary guidance of Prof. (Dr.) D.N. Sharma, Executive Director & CEO, and Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana. Dean Research & Head of Department of Radiation Oncology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, observed World Cancer Day through a series of deeply impactful and patient-centric initiatives. Embracing the 2026 theme, “United by Unique,” the observance sought to highlight that while every cancer journey is a distinct personal experience, the spirit of collective support remains universal. The event was organized with the active involvement of the Department of Surgical Oncology, led by Dr. Paras Khanna, and Dr. Girija Priya Sharma, Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology, reflecting a unified institutional commitment to oncology care.

The program featured a “Human Experience” session that served as the heart of the observance, where patients and caregivers were invited to share their personal narratives. Patients recounted their unique battles, underscoring that while medical protocols are standardized, the emotional path of healing is deeply personal. Caregivers spoke candidly about the psychological and physical challenges of supporting a loved one, reinforcing the institutional belief that “no one walks alone.” This session saw an overwhelming response from families, who expressed profound gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the nursing staff, residents, and faculty of AIIMS Jammu.

In the days leading up to the main event, the institute encouraged creative advocacy through a Poster Competition held on February 3rd. Students and staff participated enthusiastically, using art to depict vital messages on cancer awareness, prevention, and the power of unity, with prizes distributed to the winners. Furthermore, healthcare professionals conducted focused awareness sessions that prioritized the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary care models, and the necessity of supporting a patient’s emotional well-being throughout the treatment process.

The observance concluded with several gestures of solidarity and hope. In a display of empathy, care baskets were distributed to patients and caregivers. The event culminated in a ceremonial cake-cutting and a balloon release, symbolizing resilience and the institute’s unwavering promise to stand by every individual affected by cancer. Through these efforts, AIIMS Jammu reaffirmed its dedication to community awareness and high-standard, patient-centered care, ensuring that in the face of cancer, the community remains “United by Unique.”
