‘My support is issue-based, not to join NC or Congress’
SRINAGAR: Satish Sharma, the independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Chhamb constituency, has officially announced his support for the National Conference-led new government ahead of its formation. This strategic decision stems from Sharma’s commitment to addressing the pressing issues faced by the residents of Chhamb Assembly segment.
In a statement, the newly-elected Legislator Sharma, who called on NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah at Srinagar today, emphasized that his support for the new government is rooted in a shared vision for the development and progress of the Chhamb constituency. He highlighted that the challenges faced by the local population require immediate and effective solutions. “My primary goal is to advocate for the interests of the people of Chhamb. By supporting the NC government, I believe we can work together to address the critical issues that our community is facing,” Sharma stated.
Sharma has been a vocal advocate for the needs of his constituency, and his decision to align with the National Conference is focused on fostering a collaborative approach to governance. He outlined several key areas of concern, including unemployment, infrastructure development, access to quality education, construction of new Degree Colleges, establishment of industrial units and improvements in healthcare services etc. “These are not just political issues; they are matters of daily life for the people I represent,” he added.
Importantly, Sharma clarified that while he is extending his support to the new government, he does not intend to join the NC party or align himself with Congress. His position as an independent MLA allows him to remain focused on issue-based politics, ensuring that the needs of his constituents remain paramount in any decision-making process. “I am committed to maintaining my independence while working with the new government to bring about meaningful change in Chhamb constituency,” he asserted.
The National Conference leaders Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah have welcomed Satish Sharma’s support, acknowledging his dedication to the welfare of his constituency. Party leaders expressed their confidence in the collaborative efforts that will ensue, aimed at delivering tangible results for the people of Chhamb constituency.

Pertinent to mention that Satish Sharma has contested as an independent from the Chhamb seat of Jammu region, won the election by defeating BJP candidate Rajeev Sharma with a margin of 6,929 votes. Satish Sharma, who is son of two-time MP and former Congress Minister Madan Lal Sharma, polled 33,985 votes. Former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress candidate Tara Chand, who had won this seat three times, finished third with 16,449 votes.
Meanwhile, NC Vice President Omar Abdullah, who was unanimously elected as Legislature Party Leader (LPL) on Thursday, said, “We have also got the support of four Independents and we are waiting for the letter from our alliance partner Congress so as to stake a claim for government formation.”
